At age 16, Ronaldo had the opportunity to advance from Sporting Lisbon’s youth team to the first-team squad. Sporting Club manager László Bölöni was impressed with Ronaldo after seeing him play in a friendly match against Everton where he excelled by dribbling through the opposing team. On 29 September 2002, Ronaldo subsequently made his debut against Braga at age 17 in a Primeira Liga fixture. He then scored his first goal for Sporting on 7 October 2002 in a 4–0 home victory over Moreirense.

Cristiano Ronaldo was only 16 – in fact, he still was only 17 – when he made his professional debut at Sporting Clube de Portugal. Shortly afterward, he became the youngest player ever to play for the club’s junior team, with seven appearances and five goals, along with having been promoted to play for the B team.
